COLORS OF CHRISTMAS: SHADES OF PALE

Christmas brings visions of color.
However, red, green and vibrant color are not for everyone.
If you like a calmer, more neutral home - even for the holidays -

say hello to the beautiful shades of a pale Christmas

CRAVING A CHANGE OF COLOR

NEEDING CHANGE

For me it means going from an abundance of rich warm color to a more neutral palette, cooler tones, fresher colors, more light, more contrast, less stuff.

FAMILY ROOM REDO

A VERY GOOD THING

Remodeling a 70's style construction to the 21st century is always a very good thing.
Upgrading your home is important.  An updated and well maintained home is money in the bank in the long run.  I finished this project a while ago, but misplaced my before pictures - and didn't want to post without them - the change is amazing.

Nearly done: awaiting draperies and the flat screen t.v. :)

OPPORTUNITY FOR CHANGE

via Elle Decor

I find myself in your shoes this holiday season.
Trying to decide on wall color
flooring
and possibly kitchen cabinets...
and whether I want to make some big changes now that everything is being torn up
or just those that are necessary.

On a good note, I found flooring that I love.

THANKSGIVING - FABULOUS FALL

FABULOUS FALL -

In spite of our home being torn up and a general disaster area
we are happy the kids will be home from college and we will be together
(no matter the condition of the floor)

We are so grateful for family, friends, and blessings too numerous to mention
and for you
you make my day!
thank you for reading, emailing and commenting

So here is a little Thanksgiving decorating inspiration -
because I REALLY need it this year...

BEAUTIFUL BATHROOMS

The most costly room you will renovate in your home is your bathroom
Per square foot, it is the most expensive remodel

10/31/13

FEARING THE SANITARIUM

Choosing a wall color doesn't have to scare the living daylights out of you.
Just remember a couple of things.
1.  You are creating a background for your design.
2.  Backgrounds are best created with neutrals.
3.  Neutrals are just grayed down colors.
They are beautiful.
They don't have to be boring.

This room has a neutral background and a neutral palette, but is anything but boring

A GOOD WARM NEUTRAL GRAY

HELP WITH A NON GROSS COLOR

When you buy a previously owned home, you buy that owner's taste in color and surface materials.
Sometimes you are lucky, and its a neutral you can live with for a while
but sometimes, you can't wait to make changes...

CURB APPEAL

LOOKING GOOD!

Our houses can't go to the gym to get a quick workout
Or hike
or run
and they can't trim their own shrubs
So when it comes to getting in shape
looking good
and creating a beautiful curbside look at your home
your house has to rely on you.

CELEBRITY HOMES....

LOOK-E-LOOS
Former home of Michael Jackson, Los Angeles, California

Yes, I'm as guilty as any of you...
I love to look at other people's homes, especially celebrity homes.
One of my favorite blogs is Hooked On Houses where you get to peek into beautiful celebrity
and non-celebrity and even fabulous movie set homes on a regular basis.

So, I thought I'd take you on my own little tour and share my guilty pleasure,
because I'm always amazed at how 'ordinary' celebrities turn out to be.
Like this house - home to Harrison Ford.

COASTAL COLORS

  • WHEN THE BEACH IS A STATE OF MIND

Coastal decor is one of my all time favorites.
I live on the West Coast, but any coast would do.
Its a casual, easy living, non-fussy way of decorating.
A nod to the seashore in a 'not in your face' sort of way...
    not contrived ...
    a lifestyle not a trend.

FOR THE LOVE OF KITCHENS

Kitchens are the heart of the home.
It's where families gather
Even when there is more room in the rest of the house
If you could wave a magic wand to make changes in your kitchen
what would you wish for?

LAYERS OF DESIGN...

TACKLE A BIG JOB BY CUTTING IT UP INTO BITE SIZED PIECES....

I often write about choosing wall color.  It's one of the steps to creating a beautiful room, but not usually the first.  I start below that.... at my feet.

Starting at the bare bones of the room simply makes sense to me.  Start with the floor and the architectural details, like molding and trim, built-ins, paneling, wainscoting and bead board, you wish to add.

IN LOVE WITH GRAY

Welcome home.
via
A few simple rules to choosing exterior paint color -
Consider the roof color when choosing your new color -  Roof color should be darker than the house color - Make the door stand out with a darker or bright color - Accent the trim and architecture of the house with a contrasting or complimenting color - take into consideration size as a dark color will make a small house look smaller.

HOW TO CHOOSE WALL COLOR...

Fabric first.... then paint...
via
Before the first layer of decorating is applied, before the floors and the ceilings, windows and walls, you have to know your palette.  You need to have your colors in mind.

WHICH WHITE?

  • via

Sometimes subtlety is the order of the day.  When white is wanted, it doesn't have to be boring, or even very 'white'.  White, like gray or beige or blue, comes in many varieties.

OBSESSING ABOUT: HERRINGBONE

I've been working on a client's formal living room and this pattern kept cropping up in the fabrics
and rugs we chose.  I remembered how much I enjoy a little menswear pattern in a room
I wrote about it here first, but today I'm focusing on just one pattern...

NEW LOOK NEEDS NEW WALL COLOR

PULLING IT TOGETHER
Martha Stewart paint:  FAMILY MATTERS
What pulls a room together?
When you have flooring, wall color, furniture, draperies, wood tones and surfaces that have changed over time; what is the unifying factor that creates harmony?
Or is it just more than one thing?

THE ART OF ARRANGEMENT

 EDITING A ROOM
'Things' are comforting...

CBID Design

We acquire things in different ways -
some are gifts, some are mementos from travels,
some are inherited, some shopping therapy -
but acquire them we do.

NEW WALL COLOR...

NOTHING DATES A HOME FASTER THAN COLOR......

If I were to say forest green and mauve
you'd think early 80's
dusty blue and pink?
90's
gold, tan, green and red....
early 2000?
so what color trend will our current decade be remembered for?

THE COLOR YOU CRAVE: BEIGE

NEUTRAL OR NOT
via
For some of my readers, beige is a nice safe color
it is neutral and it stands the test of time
but neutral doesn't have to also be boring...

GRAY AREA

A LIGHTER SHADE OF PALE

a lighter shade for a wall color will make a room feel more spacious
a darker shade - more cozy or dramatic

TAKING THE PLUNGE

into smaller spaces

Little Friends
[I love the photo above, and the book by Seth Casteel featuring his amazing underwater photography.  This is a completely unsolicited blurb.  Just love the images.  Click on the link above to find your copy.]

So, I have a few friends and clients who have downsized lately.  Many from very large to not so large homes.  But some from large to very very small homes or apartments.
Some are retired, some are divorced, some are empty nesters, some are temporary,
all are trying to make small spaces cozy and efficient.

THE COLOR YOU CRAVE: GRAY

The world has been having a love affair...
with Gray/Grey

I get more questions, more search queries and more blog views on the subject of Gray / Grey
than any other subject.
ever.

WALLS, WALLS,

WALLS
and what to hang on them

First of all, I have to say its okay to have some space on a wall.
Even okay to have a blank wall or two
But for those walls that need something
try something a little different

BETTER CURB APPEAL

What is it that gives a home curb appeal?
I think it boils down to just a few elements.
Think about that home that everyone loves in your neighborhood or town.
What makes it the envy of the community?

1. Maintenance
denotes pride of ownership when your home is
well maintained and updated
2. Landscaping
not overgrown, or under-planted
scale is important
well tended, green, healthy
well lighted
3. Charm
the touches that say
"I'm a well loved home,
not just a house".

How does your home measure up?

LOOKING FOR SOMETHING WARM....

source

It is hard to choose the perfect yellow
One that isn't too juvenile bright, or too pale and washed out
Get the wrong hue and it can turn on you
Take on a nasty green or orange cast
But when you find the right yellow - its magic

8/2/13

CALL IT GREIGE

beige-y gray?   or gray-ish brown?

whatever you prefer to call it, the effect is the same
calm
soothing
warm
and the perfect background for the beautiful trappings of a room

SPEAKING OF COLOR

Contrasts are important in design.
New and old.
Hard and soft.
Dull and shiny.
Dark and light.

It is what makes a room unforgettable.

ORGANIZE ME....

AND MAKE IT ATTRACTIVE, PLEASE...

Shelterness
I envy the linear thinking group,
the left brainers,
the organized.
It pains me that organization comes so naturally to some
and gives me a headache

COLOR SPECIFICS

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND THAT COLOR YOU CAN SEE IN YOUR HEAD?
and when you think you have it.... and it looks good on the paint chip
why does it disappear when you paint it on your wall?

THREES THE CHARM

Paint - there is a reason the first 4 letters spell P A I N!
You think you have the perfect shade, and it turns sour when you put it on your wall.
Or, it becomes cave-like.
Or it washes out and disappears.

then there are the times an unexpected undertone shows up
and completely throws off your decorating scheme...

LONG DISTANCE DECORATING

HOW DOES IT WORK?

LONG DISTANCE DECORATING....
Burnham Design

It's perfect for you - (you know who I'm talking about!)
You like to do things yourself, but might just need a little help with the overall design...
or... You need a lot of help but don't have the budget to hire a decorator...
or... You want help with just one or two rooms...
or.... You want to go at your own pace, a little at a time...
or....You just need help picking out wall color...

7/3/13

CURING THE MISMATCHES....

HOW DO YOU COMBINE SURFACES AND COLORS?

We all have remnants of the past to haunt us.  Especially if we buy a previously owned home.  So, when we want to update our decor a little, how do we make it all play nicely together?  And what if we have more than one more permanent surface to consider?

About this time, your head starts spinning because you can't for the life of you match the wood to the tile to the wall color and you don't think it will ever come together.

When nothing about your current decor is consistent,
how do you make it feel like it is?

7/1/13

TOO MINTY?

When is a pastel too pastel???

Pastels are beautiful.  They look great as a blouse, a scarf, shoes, and Easter decorations.  On the wall....
